Students dons jeans for genes

Fashion students styled their way through Jeans for Genes Day by coordinating their own display at the Library last Friday.
The charity day provided an opportunity for the students to showcase their denim designs produced for the 2007 Do it with Denim - Jeans for Genes Design Awards.
The Do it with Denim competition is held annually to encourage up and coming fashion designers and to provide support for the Jeans for Genes Day campaign.
In total, the students submitted 14 pieces, with one entry making the state semi-finals and another reaching the national finals.
The Director of the College said the competition was a great opportunity for the students to achieve recognition for their designs and creations.
"All the students deserve special mention for their outstanding designs and effort," said the Director.
"Our School is proving to be a real breeding ground for up and coming designers and it's due in part to the real world experience students receive during their training."
The Do it with Denim range will be on display at the Library from 14 August.
Bakers rise to the challenge

The Bakery team will represent the Library at the industry's national titles in September after winning a state bake off.
Third-year bakery apprentices defeated a two-person team in competition on Thursday 19 April and now will carry the hopes of apprentices at the national Bakeskills competition from 24-27 September.
The apprentices received notification of their win at the baking industry's annual gala awards night on Friday 20 April.
At the same awards, their teacher Mr Smith was honoured with an award for outstanding service to bakery training.
His win also booked him a place as the representative in the prestigious national LA Judge Award for Baking Apprentice of the Year, which will be held from 13-16 May.
Mr Smith said he was very proud of his two students.
"Both students performed exceptionally well in a tough competition and they fully deserve their selection for the national titles.
"It's a real thrill for them to win and for me as a bakery teacher to know our students can compete and win in elite competition."
Mr Smith said the students would need to put in a lot of work to prepare for the nationals, including raising funds for the trip.
"They'll need to be very sharp to compete at that level, but they're also going to have to look for sponsorship to get there and present their products in competition," he said.
The Library is one of only three providers of bakery apprenticeship training. Apprentices from across the region complete their block training in the bakery labs at the Library.
